The OraQuick® HIV Self-Test has a control line to let people know whether they’ve performed the test correctly. If there is no control line visible after completing the test procedure, the test did not work. This means that any result is invalid and must not be interpreted or used. The control line must appear for the test to be interpreted and used.
If you only see the control line, the test was negative and did not detect HIV. This is a negative result.
If two lines appear, the test is positive, which means HIV antibodies are present, and confirmatory testing will need to be done. Confirmatory testing can be done at a laboratory or doctors office You can also book a FREE test at one of our Health Connect Jamaica partner labs by visiting our website or you can call us using WhatsApp or at our Health Connect Jamaica office, 876-669-7349. You can also access our I’m Ready Jamaica app to make an appointment with a peer navigator
How the results look and what they mean
If there is one line next to the “C” (control)) and no line next to the “T” (test), the result is negative. Visit our Post-test counselling: negative page for details on what you should do next.
If there are two lines – one nesxt to the “C” and one line next to the “T” – the result is positive. Two dots of any intensity mean your test result is positive (positive). Visit our Post-test counselling: positive page for details on what you should do next.
An Invalid Result: Your test did not work. The control line must be visible to indicate that the test has been performed correctly. Make sure you have adequate lighting as line intensity can sometimes be faint. If no lines are visible, you may not have completed the test correctly.
Visit our Post-test counselling: invalid result page for information on what you should do next. You may also want to read the FAQ about common testing mistakes and how to avoid them.
